About the work
‘Sugar Mammy Sugar Daddy’ are a series of edible well known Irish
characters; Bertie Ahern, Mary Harney, Bishop Casey and Daniel O’Donnell;
cast as dolls in white castor and icing sugar.
Sugar, having connotations of sweetness,
innocence and instant gratification etc., also has duel qualities of decay
and sickness if abused or over consumed.
The use of sugar for these characters creates a humorous parody between the
instant gratification of a short term feel good factor that they offer as a
mask to the reality of modern Ireland
This work highlights the underlying motives
of figureheads such as politicians who gloss over with sugar coated policies
to entice people, like children in
a fairytale. After all, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down!
