About the work
For this sound work Cunningham has taken ordinary people’s description
of a mundane, everyday happening in the course of their day. She has then rearranged
these accounts into poems of the ordinary. She playfully transforms the context
and meaning by using opera trained singers to sing this mundane poetry. The
opera becomes a narrative of unconnected people relating their everyday experience
while the use of opera singer’s changes that experience into something
extraordinary. The end result is a unique experience that is often quite humorous
and absurd.
The work combines high art such as opera and our obsession with mundane
reality programmes, this is a deliberate strategy on the part of Cunningham.
However
the work also sets the question as to whether the ordinary everyday happening
is a worthy subject for art. Cunningham has included the words of the poems
with the CD so the listener can fully engage and maybe relate their own lives
to the lyrics.
