About the work
The intersection of chance and timing are essential in the
formation of human relationships. Modern mechanisms and media had also
increasingly aided in the way we see and perceive relationships as well as
how we form and sustain them. The mass media that we have today can be said
to be transforming the way we regard relationships, friendships and love.
Some think it allows for greater freedom in choosing who we want to form
meaningful and bonding ties with; others are skeptical and uneasy about such
accessibility and the decrease in value and authenticity of such
relationships and hence it’s superficiality. Either way, there will
certainly always be shades of grey. However, we cannot ignore the fact that
given whatever type of medium that people are forming relationships and
romantic connections these days, chance is such an important ingredient.
I like the word ‘chance’, for it throws open a situation of unpredictability
and mystery, something that defies certainties, expectations and promises.
Making ‘art’ and allowing the image to unfold in front of one is
Chance.?Stumbling upon a mystical connection with someone on the internet or
across the room is Chance.?Slotting pennies in a vending machine and picking
an artist’s work is Chance.
With these in mind, I have conflated all these three ideas together to
create a work that comprises of 10 randomly selected (and agreeable)
individuals and have their caricatures drawn and contacts attached.
Interested parties in Dublin will have to take the chance to firstly want to
invest in this drawing and also to invest in a relationship with the person
chosen thereafter.
There are multiple mediums at work here – the caricature, contact
information, the artist as mediator, the vending machine – that act as
intermediary forces that governs 10 potentially meaningful relationships in
the future, as a result of these art works.
